In April of 2007, on his way home from the weekly Rotary Club Meeting, Edmonds Police Chief David Stern died of a brain aneurysm. He was weeks away from beginning his year as president of the Club, a well-deserved honor for a man who had become a stalwart of both the community and the Club. The 2006-2007 president, working with Darlene Stern and the Edmonds Police Department developed a plan for the Rotary Club to memorialize Chief Stern in a fitting and ongoing way, by creating the David M. Stern Memorial Officer of the Year Award. The award is given each year to an Edmonds police officer who best exemplifies the service and professionalism brought to the Edmonds Police Force by Chief Stern.
The award has been presented each year since 2008, in May, during the celebration of Law Enforcement Week, by Darlene Stern and another representative of the Rotary Club.
When not being presented, the commemorative plaque hangs on the wall of the Edmonds Police Station, across from the chief’s office.

The Rotary influence appears to be reciprocal as the Edmonds Police Department recently adopted a new mission statement, one which sounds remarkably like the mission of Rotary.
